Solar renewable energy farm
Ahead of efforts to raise the production of electricity in the ECOWAS region, the West African Power Pool (WAPP) has signed a deal with an Israeli firm, Gigawatt Global, to build $1 billion of renewable energy projects in the sub-region.
A statement by Zanswat Bowsan, Press Officer of the Israeli Embassy, Abuja said the project is expected to build 800 megawatt trans-boundary green energy across the West African region to enhance economic growth.
Though the statement was silent on the particular areas mapped out for the scheme, it noted that the initiative was conceived by the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, when he addressed the ECOWAS summit on June 5, 2017 in Liberia.
The Embassy averred that the deal is to reaffirm the Prime Minister’s commitment to strengthen relations with Africa.
The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Guy Feldman in statement stressed that “This MOU signed with WAPP, is a powerful metaphor to the West and the rest of Africa. It paves the way for future Israeli innovation, which when joined by visionaries and institutions, can challenge anything and create hope for all.”
Feldman said he held a meeting with stakeholders in the African energy sector to explore solar fields in 10 African countries. “The deal will build the West Africa Power Pool and create a regional electricity system.
