Gov. Otti of Abia and Gov. Soludo of Anambra State adoring Akwete Weaved fabrics
For time immemorial, the people of Akwete in Aba axis of Abia State had been famous for their specialty in clothes weaving industry.
No doubt, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and the host state governor, Dr. Alex Otti had taken the product as their official signature clothes till tomorrow.
The clothes are strong, beautiful and always fitting when sowed.
Only recently and during her working visit to Abia State, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu made a donation of N2bn forthe growth of the industry.
Whereas industry analysts say the ₦2 billion donation to develop the Akwete weaving industry in Abia State is more than financial support, indigenous fabrics experts say it is an investment in Nigeria’s cultural heritage, women’s empowerment, rural livelihoods and the creative economy.
For centuries, Akwete has remained one of Nigeria’s finest hand-woven textiles, reflecting the history and artistry of its people. Yet it has never received the recognition or commercial promotion it truly deserves. This intervention can help change that.
A stronger Akwete industry will create jobs, empower rural women, attract tourists and showcase one of Africa’s finest indigenous fabrics to Nigeria and the world. By blending traditional weaving with modern fashion, branding, e-commerce and global partnerships, Akwete can become a recognised Nigerian luxury fabric.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu has demonstrated a commitment to preserving this treasured heritage that even many of us from the South-East never thought to champion.
