A number of intelligent and development minded Anambra citizens home and in diaspora have made a passionate appeal to the State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo to avoid the error of building another airport in the state and consider developing Onitsha River Port for the sustainable development of not only Anambra, but the entire South East.
In an open appeal, the concerned citizens said as follows:
“Your Excellency, Governor Charles Soludo, this is not an attack. It is a sincere appeal from many Ndi Anambra who want to see our state make the best use of its scarce resources.
“Anambra already has an airport built during the administration of Willie Obiano. Whether it is being fully utilized is another discussion. But before we begin building Airport No. 2, shouldn’t we first maximize the one we already have?
“If billions of naira are available for another airport, why not channel those funds into building an Onitsha Seaport?
“Almost every importer in Onitsha Main Market depends on containers that pass through the Lagos seaports before making the long and expensive journey to Anambra. Imagine the economic transformation if those goods could come directly into Anambra.
A functional seaport would:
✅ Reduce transportation costs for importers.
✅ Create thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
✅ Boost commerce and industrialization.
✅ Increase internally generated revenue.
✅ Position Anambra as the true commercial gateway of the South-East.
“Beyond infrastructure, our greatest investment should be in our people.
“Professor Soludo, you’re an economist. Wouldn’t it make more economic sense to strengthen education, equip our youths with practical skills, support entrepreneurship, and invest in human capital development? A state grows not just by building more structures, but by building more opportunities.
With due respect, this is not about building projects that make headlines. It is about building projects that change lives.
“Ndi Anambra deserve investments that solve today’s pressing challenges and prepare the state for tomorrow’s economy.
