The leadership of leading State Varsity, Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), has taken a strategic step towards enhancing its global ranking and academic reputation through a seminar organized by the University in collaboration with Times Higher Education.
The seminar, which was held on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026, was aimed at repositioning the University for improved global visibility, stronger reputation, and a more competitive standing in international university rankings.
Speaking at the seminar, the Vice-Chancellor Abia State University Uturu, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Professor Gazie Okpara, described the initiative as timely and strategic, stating that the University is committed to adopting innovative measures that will improve its research output, academic visibility, and overall global competitiveness.
He further emphasized the need for staff to key into the University’s vision of becoming a globally recognized institution by increasing their research contributions and publishing in reputable journals.
Delivering his presentation, the Regional Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at Times Higher Education, Dr. Victor Okeugo, underscored the importance of global recognition for higher institutions. He explained that universities must deliberately align with international standards to gain visibility and relevance in the global academic community.
Dr. Okeugo identified the consistent publication of high-quality research in internationally recognized and indexed platforms as a key requirement for attaining global rankings, adding that increased visibility not only reflects academic excellence but also enhances opportunities for international collaborations, research funding, and student exchange programs.
In his remark, the Chairman, University Ranking Committee, and Dean School of Postgraduate Studies ABSU, Professor Osita Ugbogu, expressed appreciation to Times Higher Education for the insightful session and their continued support towards advancing the University’s global outlook.
He also commended the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for prioritizing initiatives that will enhance ABSU’s ranking and visibility, while urging participants to translate the knowledge gained into actionable outcomes for a greater growth of the University.
In a vote of thanks, former Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences, Professor J.C. Igwe, appreciated the resource person and participants for their active engagement, noting that the seminar has provided a clear roadmap for strengthening ABSU’s research capacity and global relevance. He encouraged sustained collaboration and commitment among staff to ensure the successful implementation of the strategies discussed.
Participants at the seminar, which included members of management, academic staff, and key stakeholders, engaged in fruitful discussions and interactive sessions on practical strategies for improving institutional ranking and visibility globally.
