Containier cleared in Lagos trapped at Head Bridge flyover in Onitsha due to eatsern ports are neglected by government
The many troubles associated with official neglect in upgrading Eastern Ports have continued to take tools on private businesses in the region.
Investigations reveal that several eastern ports are in need of upgrade including Onne, Port Harcourt, Warri, Calabar and others, but instead, the Federal Government is borrowing money from UK to upgrade Apapa and Tincan Ports upon the fact that part of the concessionaires agreement is to regularly upgrade the ports with their
All Nigerians hear from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, is that efforts are being made to upgrade eastern ports but nothing is actually happening, thus forcing importers in the region to keep risking their containers from Lagos ports to east.
Just weekend, a truck carrying over 40ft container cleared from Lagos port of Apapa, became trapped beneath a flyover bridge at Upper Iweka along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Onitsha, in Anambra State on Saturday, causing a major traffic disruption and drawing widespread attention on social media.
A viral video circulating online captured the dramatic moment the truck driver, assisted by several bystanders, attempted to maneuver the heavy-duty vehicle out from underneath the bridge after it became lodged. In the footage, concerned residents and passersby could be seen gathering around the scene while efforts were made to free the container without causing further damage.
Whereas no maritime or relevant government agency has made any response, the incident occurred at the busy Upper Iweka axis, one of the major transportation hubs in Onitsha, where vehicular movement is often heavy throughout the day. Witnesses said the truck became stuck after the height of the container appeared to exceed the clearance beneath the flyover bridge.
Despite the potentially dangerous situation, no casualties or injuries were reported. The incident, however, led to temporary traffic congestion as motorists slowed down to observe the unfolding efforts to remove the truck from the bridge area.
For now, authorities had not issued an official statement explaining the circumstances that led to the incident. It also remains unclear whether the truck driver misjudged the bridge’s height clearance or if other factors contributed to the near-tragic occurrence.
The video has since generated reactions online, with many social media users expressing concern over road safety standards and calling for correct space and heights for flyovers in allowing high trucks like containers to pass freely.
