EVC of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida
The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, has once again, reaffirmed the readiness of the agency to deepen data-driven regulation and consumer empowerment.
Speaking as a panelist at the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) in Ankara, Turkey, he said “It was an opportunity to share what we have been building at the @NgComCommission regulatory system that prioritises data and transparency; how we are moving from data collection to data intelligence, and from mere public transparency to transparency that empowers the consumer and holds the operator more accountable”.
He explained that the NCC is leveraging digital tools to improve regulatory oversight and consumer understanding. “We shared how our Public Maps, industry statistics, Quarterly Network Performance Reports, and simplified reporting frameworks are helping consumers better understand how their networks serve them, while also enabling the broader digital economy to thrive.” The Commission’s Public Maps allow subscribers to check network coverage and quality across different locations before choosing a service provider.
At the Regulators’ Roundtable, Maida deliberated on the evolving role of regulators in fostering digital markets. He highlighted Nigeria’s regulatory priorities, including “strengthening transparency, responsible conduct, and accountability within the internet ecosystem through the Internet Code of Practice.” He also pointed to efforts to enhance sector resilience through the NCC’s Cyber Resilience Framework, and to “deepening collaboration with other public authorities to promote a unified approach to digital market governance.”
Another key focus, he noted, is “shaping an incentive-based telecommunications market, particularly through spectrum and infrastructure regulation.” This, he said, is critical to attracting investment and expanding broadband access across Nigeria.
Business Hilights.ng reports that the GSR, organized annually by the ITU, brings together telecommunications regulators from around the world to exchange ideas, share best practices, and discuss pressing telecom policy issues. This year’s symposium endorsed new “2026 Best Practice Guidelines: Regulatory Governance Essentials,” a digital regulation toolkit designed to support regulators as they navigate increasingly complex digital markets and ecosystems.
Dr. Maida participated as a panelist in a session titled: “Harnessing the Power of Transformative Tech: Regulatory Approaches.” He joined a distinguished panel including: Carlos Manuel Baigorri, President of Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações (ANATEL) of Brazil; Philip Marnick, Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Bahrain; and Donna Bethea-Murphy of Viasat Inc.
