Following its successful completion, the Abia state government has announced the commencement of the operation of Umuahia central bus terminal.
The Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu made this known during a press conference held at the terminal.
The Commissioner who disclosed that the Bus terminal has the capacity to accommodate all transport operators in Umuahia city, announced that the Abia green shuttle buses have begun operations from the central bus terminal, assuring that on 23rd and 25th May, 2026 the informal and formal transport operators will commence their operations at the new facility.
Dr Ukaegbu noted that the management of the facility is undertaken by private partnership to achieve sustainability, adding that there is adequate co-operation among other transport operators towards the process.
Highlighting on the operation of Electric buses, the Commissioner disclosed that the routes will be expanded with the arrival of other tranches of buses. He further cited the progress of other projects ongoing within the Transport ministry.
Also speaking, the Director General, Abia State Orientation Agency, Lady Ure Abazie stressed that the state government has long engaged with transport operators in the state to ensure maximum cooperation.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Barr. Olanma Awa-Jane stressed that computerized testing centres have been set up in Umuahia and Aba. She said that testing of vehicles at the centres are conducted at no cost.
