SEDC Integrated Metrorail Initiative for South East States
From Azubuike Iwunor
The Managing Director of South East Development Commission (SEDC), Mr. Mark Okoye II should prioritize the development of a modern railway framework that connects the five South Eastern states of Nigeria.
A functional rail network linking Onitsha, Owerri, Aba, Enugu, and Abakaliki would become one of the most transformative infrastructural projects in the history of the region.
Such a project, if properly planned and executed in partnership with South East Governors and private investors of both foreign and Igbo extraction, can be realistically achieved within 10 years.
Transportation remains one of the greatest challenges affecting economic growth in the South East. Most businesses depend heavily on road transport, which is expensive, slow, and often unsafe due to poor road conditions and traffic congestion.
A railway system would provide a faster, safer, and more efficient means of movement for people, goods, and services across the region. It would also reduce transportation costs for traders, manufacturers, and farmers, thereby improving productivity and increasing regional competitiveness.

The South East is widely recognized as the commercial and industrial hub of Nigeria, with cities like Onitsha and Aba serving as major centers of trade and manufacturing.
A railway connection between these cities would strengthen commerce and attract both local and foreign investors. Investors such as manufacturers, construction and real estate companies are naturally attracted to regions with reliable infrastructure, efficient transportation, and organized economic systems. Therefore, the railway project would not only improve mobility but also position the South East as one of Africa’s leading economic regions.
In addition, the railway network would significantly boost agriculture, especially in Ebonyi State, known for its agricultural strength. Farm produce could be transported quickly and efficiently to major markets in Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, and Enugu with ease.
This would encourage large-scale farming, create employment opportunities, and improve food distribution within the region.
The project would also promote tourism and recreation. Enugu and Owerri are known for their hospitality, entertainment, and tourist attractions. Easier transportation would encourage visitors, increase tourism revenue, and stimulate the hospitality industry.
Ultimately, SEDC should focus on practical projects that directly impact the lives of ordinary people.
The railway framework represents a symbol of unity, progress, and economic rebirth for the Igbo nation. By utilizing the creativity, resources, and entrepreneurial spirit of the South East people, the region can build a prosperous homeland where citizens and investors alike will proudly invest for future generations.
This project is estimated to cost between $10 billion to $20 billion and can become achievable if it is executed in phases over 10 years.
Example:
- Phase 1: Onitsha – Owerri – Aba
- Phase 2: Aba – Enugu
- Phase 3: Enugu – Abakaliki
- Phase 4: Cargo terminals, industrial hubs, and tourism stations
———- Funding can come from:
