The manufacturer of the approved 2026 FIFA World Cup ball has revealed that “it is no longer just a ball… it’s basically a mini computer on the pitch”.
The official football for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Adidas TRIONDA, features advanced “Connected Ball Technology,”
Before every match, the official ball is plugged in and charged like a smartphone.
Why? Because it now contains a built-in battery-powered sensor that tracks everything in real time.
Inside it is a tiny 14-gram electronic chip that sends data up to 500 times per second, including speed and positioning data.

The 500Hz inertial measurement unit (IMU) tracks every touch, kick, and deflection with split-second precision.
That means every single action is captured:
- Every pass
- Every shot
- Every touch
- Every deflection
▪︎ Every spin
Nothing escapes the system.
The ball communicates directly with VAR, Semi-Automated Off sides and stadium tracking systems, helping recreate the match in ultra-precise 3D detail.
Data from the ball syncs with stadium cameras to create these live 3D models. This helps referees determine the exact millisecond of a touch, dramatically speeding up complex handball and offside calls. It can even detect the exact millisecond a player touches it — making offside calls accurate down to the millimeter.
Handballs? Marginal decisions? Much harder to miss now.
Aerodynamic Panel Construction: The ball features a four-panel design with intentionally deep seams and specific embossed textures, providing optimal in-flight stability and enhanced grip for players in wet or humid conditions
Rechargeable Battery: Unlike traditional footballs, the sensor requires inductive charging prior to each match, providing about six hours of active
In short, football is shifting into a new era — where performance isn’t just watched… it’s fully measured.
A few years ago, the idea of charging a football sounded like science fiction.
Now it’s reality.
